BMW's $0.02

Just read up on BMW blog about how much BMW dislikes the X-Class which to me is hard to see why. The way I seen it is, its just an attack. They probably like it but are mad that Mercedes of all car makers got to it before they did. Even if BMW comes out with an X-Class rival it won't be nearly as nice.

BMW and Mercedes are always going at each other, I see them as the two main rivaling German brands and they probably see the same too. There's Audi, but not as prominent as the other two. Words are going to be flung around and BMW may be looking to release their own as well.
As always and as true as it is they need to know when to stop and this is a prime situation for just that.
Unless of course its some special product that people might want. That BMW M4 UTE rendering sure had people going but not set to happen.

I'll believe BMW when I start seeing a test mule from them.
They'll probably let Mercedes test the waters first with the X-Class and if it fails in sales, BMW will have their comments justified. If it works out, then BMW will silently release their own and make no reference to this moment.
I really don't think its a matter of seeing the waters getting tested but instead its more about bringing the right product to market, as long as they can build and configure it right people will buy.

People even thought that the Japanese couldn't build pickups right but they have for decades and now in the global truck market you have brands like Toyota taking the lead.
Buyers will need to get used to the idea of luxury pickups and it will take time, but the X-Class does a good job leading the way.

In a way they have been, just look at how much all the regular trucks have been improved over the years. Tundra, F-150, Silverado, all of them have some very nice luxury trims. Its got to point that they are just like the SUV's their brands sell. This has been happening for 10+ years.
The guys at VW Australia doesn't seem to be a fan of the X-Class either when talking to motoring: https://www.carthrottle.com/out/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.motoring.com.au%2Fvolkswagen-mocks-mercedes-benz-ute-109666%2F

"It's very difficult to disguise a Nissan Navara," said Volkswagen Australia's corporate communications boss Paul Pottinger. "If I was a buyer I might be surprised [with the quality]. When a Mercedes-Benz owner opens the door and sees Nissan hinges, the game might be up,"

they do have a point because this really is a Narava that has been reskinned which doesn't exactly help its case. Looking at the proportions and how the frame is on both models, its not that hard to see how much they relate.

lucky for MB, they know most people won't care and will buy purely for image.
