High Power high MPG? Can the X-Class achieve it?

Mercedes said for themselves that the X-Class will have a "high-torque six-cylinder engine" as part of its engine line up but in this era of hybrid technology, what are the odds we'll see some integration of that for a high-torque, high-range truck?

OR could this just be a regular run of the mill V6 we're used to seeing from Mercedes?

If it's high torque I'm pretty sure it may be set aside for the high range truck/suvs and what not. The regular run of the mill v6 isn't really a high torquey engine
I'm under the assumption that the X-Class engine will have plenty of low range torque on tap, simply because of the segment it's in and the kind of hauling it'll have to do. A hybrid would be good for fuel economy, but may not add too much in terms of performance.
Looking at the current engine offerings that have across the lineup, which potential engine could they put in there that has a good amount of torque at a lower rpm range?
Diesels should be part of the global engine line up, just looking at the GLC and similar MB models you can already see how much they offer diesels. RAM has a 1500 diesel, Ford is coming out with an F150 Diesel and Nissan has a Titan diesel... guess who might follow ;)
Diesels for sure. As for the gasoline engines, I would also look at the GLC and see what power trains are in there that they would re-utilize and make minor changes to.

Unfortunately they said they weren't going to have any AMG variants so I guess we can rule out the bi-turbo 4L V8 and possibly the bi-turbo V6 3L that they use in the 63 and 43?
I wouldn't rule it out, but they could be used and de-tuned perhaps or even tuned to have a better output for a pickup truck.

I would bank on the 3L V6 being used opposed to the powertrain of the AMG 63s.
Narava's have been pushing about 250 hp and up to 375 lb-ft out of the current V6, X-Class being based on the same platform we should expect similar numbers. Anything under 350 torque would turn me off, this is a body on frame vehicle after all.
Are the Navaras engines gasoline or diesel powered? Gasoline engine pushing that kind of power sounds pretty good. Either or would be great but the torque introduction and power band would probably be quite different.
its a diesel
we might not get that same diesel but this is Mercedes and if there's anyone to make it happen in the truck market its them
what helps is they have other products that could use a similar powerplant
Yeah, pretty sure they'd use one of the diesels that they have on the lineup. Could be the same ones they use in the GLE or something.

249hp and 457lb-ft of torque at 1600rpm which is bonkers. Turbo diesel v6

Perfect for towing just about anything someone with an active lifestyle has unless its some massive yacht that only a 3500 series truck can haul. If they can get up to 7000LBS towing capacity it will do them a lot of good.
The GLE comes with 7500lbs I believe, so I wouldn't have a doubt the pickup can do exactly that if not more depending on how they configure it. So that's something I'd be perfectly content with. But again... that's if they bring it out with that engine setup.

Narava gets 3500KG which translates to 7700, close to what you reported. Narava is probably the best reference point since they will be sharing a platform, no way Mercedes could have done this themselves and justified taking on the cost for a new product like this.
Agree. It's their first time in this segment, there's no point going all out one off for themselves as the costs would be through the roof with all the R&D they would have to put in.

It sure would, at least during the times we're in now, cars based on a similar platform can be worlds apart in what they feature and how they're configured so in the end we still get a true Mercedes product.
